A capacity crowd of all ages turned out for Timespan's celebration of National Poetry Day at Newbury Library on October the 5th.

The evening was dubbed an unqualified success by all who attended. Every performer generated a special kind of magic but special mention must be made of Charles Spicer's reading of the Ruin backed by Tonewall ,which made the hairs on everyone's necks stand on end especially when Charles entered into the 'Weird changed that...' section of the poem ... and the Tonewallers brought up a Hitchcock sound track to match the narrative.

Inspired by Charles's performance Richard Westall gave one of the best readings of his poems I have heard this year - also backed by Tonewall.

Both Rocky and Spartacus's sets were marred by technical problems but Spartacus managed to break free of their difficulties and delivered a fine version of the fifteenth century 'Bring Us In Good Ale' complete with trance sonic effects.

The Timespanner's samba band showed just why they are getting to be so popular in the district - within seconds they had found the groove and got everyone's feet tapping and then, with the entry of Abina Parshad-Griffin's West Indian dialect poem, the whole groove got taken a notch still higher !

Finally M4, showed exactly why they were topping the bill. Their word perfect performance was only topped by their accapella encore, a gospel song which went some way towards showing their roots and why this family based group are both so hot and tight - I don't think this will be the last time that we hear them in the Newbury Area.
